Yosemite offers great fishing, with 58 permanent streams
and a combined length of 770 miles. Rainbow trout and brown
trout can be found in the streams.
Season:
The season for stream and river fishing opens the last Saturday
in April and continues through Nov. 15. All lakes and reservoirs are
surrounding Yosemite National Park open year-round. The only exception
is Frog Creek near Lake Eleanor; fishing season does not open there until June 15 to protect spawning rainbow trout.
Best spots:
You will have better luck catching a bite in lower elevations
and all summer along the Merced River. The stretch of Tuolumne River above Hetch Hetchy is known as one the better fishing spots.
License:
All people 16 and older must obtain a California
Fishing License to fish in Yosemite National Park. These licenses may
be purchased at any of the Visitor Centers in the park.
Gear:
Any fishing gear you may need is sold at the
Yosemite Village Sport Shop in the Yosemite Valley.
Fishing Tips:
There is a special catch and release regulation which applies for native
rainbow trout caught in the Merced River between the Happy Isles Footbridge
and Pohono Bridge. You may use only artificial lures or flies with barbless
hooks. Bait fishing is prohibited.
