Around Giant Forest
General Sherman Tree:
A short, easy walk to the world's largest tree, named in 1879
by a Civil War veteran. South of Lodgepole, 2 miles (3.2 km).
Big Trees Trail:
Opens mid-summer, 2/3-mile trail circles Round Meadow. Wheelchair
accessible from the Giant Forest Museum. Allow 1/2-hour round trip.
Along Moro Rock and Crescent Meadow
Road
This 3-mile dead-end road begins at the Giant Forest Museum
and explores the southwest portion of the grove.
Moro Rock:
Wonderful view of the Great Western Divide and the western
half of the park, 2 miles from Generals Highway.
Crescent Meadow:
Several trails start here, including the 1-mile route to Tharp's
Log, summer home of the first settler in the Giant Forest. Hikers can also access the High Sierra
Trail which reaches Mt. Whitney 71 miles later. Stay on designated
trails, you will see a magical view of wildflowers in the summer.
Nearby Trails
Tokopah Falls:
Starts in Lodgepole campground and goes along Marble fork of
the Kaweah River, ending below the granite cliffs and waterfall of Tokopah
Canyon. Allow 2 1/2 to 4 hours.
Little Baldy:
Rising to 700 feet of vertical terrain in 1.7 miles to a rocky summit
with a great view. Allow three to four hours round trip.
In the Foothills
Marble Falls:
Near site #17 at Potwisha Campground. Follow the dirt road across the
concrete ditch and look for the start of the trail along the steep bank to the right. This is a 3.7-mile dead-end trail covering rugged terrain.
Paradise Creek:
Follow the footpath across from site #26 in Buckeye Flat Campground.
The trail follows Paradise Creek for 1 mile.
South Fork
Ladybug: Easy hike along the South Fork of the Kaweah in the foothills. Park at
South Fork campground, cross the river via a footbridge to the trail. Then, the 3-mile trail ends at one of the lowest elevation sequoia groves.
Around Grant Grove
General Grant Tree:
A 1/3-mile paved trail leads to the 267-foot Sequoia, the world's largest living tree. Since 1925, it has been at the center of a Christmas ceremony in which park rangers place a large memorial wreath in memory of those who gave their lives in service to their country.
Panoramic Point:
Don't forget your camera for views of the high Sierra on a 2.3-mile walk to Panoramic Point.
National Forest/ Monument
Hume Lake:
During the summer, the lake offers fishing, swimming, boat rental and
camping. The lake is 8 miles north of Grant Grove on Highway 180 and then 3 miles south
on Hume Lake Road.
Cedar Grove
& Vicinity
Roaring River Falls:
A peaceful five-minute walk to a powerful roaring waterfall.
Three miles east of the Village turnoff. Allow yourself an hour.
Mist Falls:
Follow the river to the park's largest waterfall.
This hike takes about four to five hours and is 9 miles round trip. May be a bit strenuous for some.
